The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 2200 animals. More than 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see a large array of sharks, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and learn why North Carolina’s waterways are so special.
This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island’s 63,000 square foot state operated physical plant. This includes responsibility for housekeeping, operation and maintenance of all mechanical systems, maintenance of life support systems, grounds maintenance, security, fire, septic system, and maintenance of the facility structure. Other responsibilities include staff supervision, inventory, shipping and receiving, and coordination of maintenance contracts. This is accomplished by using in-house housekeepers and mechanics under his/her direct supervision and outside contractors. The Building Superintendent works under the direction of the Director of Operations and Husbandry and works closely with all other staff to support their department’s many and varied requirements. It is the responsibility of this position to provide and maintain a safe and pleasant environment for both staff and visitors. This position is responsible for ensuring that the Aquarium is operated as efficiently as possible using the latest housekeeping techniques, energy saving strategies, and through the efficient use of supplies, materials, and staff. Evening, weekend, and holiday work will be required.
Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid NC Driver's License.

Experience Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies **To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Any information omitted from the application form will not be considered for qualifying credit** In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below: Demonstrated experience in facility maintenance. Demonstrated experience in the use of a wide variety of electrical and hand tools. Demonstrated experience in at least three of the following categories: Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, HVAC, Engine repair, or Hydraulics (water treatment). General knowledge of safety standards and facility maintenance. Supervisory experience. Must have a valid NC Driver's License or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four (4) years of progressive experience in facility maintenance or construction including experience in at least three (3) building or mechanical trades including one (1) year of supervisory experience in construction, maintenance and/or repair of buildings and facilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
