Safety & Security Assistant Manager

Under the general supervision of the Safety & Security Manager, this position position provides a positive and visible presence to the public in the Zoo for health and safety risks and hazards in the workplace, and guest service, first aid and safety needs.  The position assists the Safety & Security Manager with supervision and oversight for daily activities of Security staff, along with inspecting work areas, discovering hazardous elements, following safety manuals, SDS sheets and guidelines, managing first aid centers and assisting with work safety incidents.

Essential Functions:

Security (Primary)

  • Patrol and monitor exhibits, buildings and grounds to maintain a visible presence for guests, offering high quality guest service and monitoring adherence to Zoo rules.
  • Address security concerns such as improper guest behavior, lost child(ren), or other suspicious or hazardous activity.  Request assistance from Security Manager and/or law enforcement when needed.  Assist in reuniting lost children with parents and guardians.
  • Provide information to guests concerning the Zoo, Zoo operations and simple educational information about the animal collection and exhibits.
  • Provide first aid treatment for guest injuries as needed.  Request medical support or emergency services for injuries requiring treatment beyond first aid.
  • Maintains awareness of guest accidents or injuries and provides prompt assistance including basic first aid as certified, when needed.  Alerts Safety and Security management of incidents requiring additional attention or treatment.
  • Gather detailed facts and prepare reports of incidents in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Provide crowd control as needed during peak attendance as well as special events.
  • Open and secure building facilities.
  • Provide escorts for animal transport and zoo deliveries as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Safety (Secondary):

  • Maintain OSHA, USDA & EPA compliance with the following topics in mind.
    • Perform routine job safety analyses, building safety inspections and reviews
    • Emergency Action Plans
    • Fire Prevention Program
    • Hazard Communication Program
    • Personal Protective Equipment Program
    • Maintain training documentation
  • Assist in maintaining safety guidelines, procedures, and policies.
  • Able to effectively communicate both safety and environmental training topics.
  • Assist in ensuring and monitor regulatory issues. (i.e., DNR, EPA, DOT)
  • Provide initial new-hire safety training and follow-up interaction for new employees.
  • Assists the Safety & Security Manager with accident management and prevention.
  • Maintain and file documentation needed for reporting to controlling agencies.
  • Able to interpret and decipher environmental permit requirements.
  • Report safety and environmental issues to the Safety & Security Manager.
  • Aid safety manager in designing safety protocols.
  • Inspect work area premises for hazardous elements.
  • Preparing safety manuals and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with departmental heads in implementing safety processes.
  • Manage first aid center and first aid boxes in work premises.
  • Strictly adhere to corporate safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Encourages employees and supervisors to report any injury that occurs on the job immediately.
  • Encourage employees and supervisors to report all unsafe conditions immediately and schedules or coordinates repairs as soon as possible.

Compliance audit & reporting

  • Prepare and maintain required environmental permits and submit associated regulatory reports
  • Maintains records for statistical measurement and conformance to standard practices of the safety industry.
  • Prepares and maintains required safety reports.
  • Reviews and coordinates with Safety & Security Manager to OSHA inquiries.
  • Audits various safety program elements of effectiveness, schedules and performs safety inspections, and identifies issues and develops corrective action plans.

Personnel Management

  • Assist in orientation and training for new Security staff.
  • Oversee staff performance, providing general feedback and correction when appropriate, and informing Security Manager of serious or ongoing issues.
  • Manages payroll for direct reports and oversees the implementation of wage and hour regulations.
  • Manages the schedules for all direct reports and oversees the implementation of appropriate regulations. 
  • Assist Manager with other staffing needs, as requested.

Experience Required

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements: -Associate degree related field, or equivalent -Minimum 5 years applicable security or grounds patrol experience required. -Minimum 2 years supervisory experience preferred. -Must be able to register as a proprietary private security officer with the California -Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). -Ability to deal calmly and authoritatively with the public and to work under considerable pressure in crowds and with difficult individuals. -Knowledge of OSHA, USDA, EPA and applicable regulatory agencies. -Basic computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office. -Basic Life Support, AED, CPR, First Aid, O2 every 2 years. -Valid California driver’s license and a clean driving record, preferred. -Excellent written and verbal English communications skills required. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus. -Ability to work evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Physical Requirements: These are physical and mental requirements of the position as it is typically performed. The employee may be required to bend, stoop, or kneel. -The employee is regularly required to lift and/or carry up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. -Close visual acuity to view a computer monitor and read printed materials; distance vision sufficient to monitor Zoo guests and general surroundings. -Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone), at normal speaking levels with or without correction. -Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken information to others in small and large group settings. Work Environment: -The position primarily functions outdoors, with exposure to heat, cold, and inclement weather. -The employee may be exposed to environmental substances such as dust/dirt from Zoo grounds. -The position works in close proximity to Zoo animals. -Occasional local travel may be required.
