Seasonal Animal Care Professional - Trails of Africa

Seasonal – Five Month Assignment


The Birmingham Zoo is currently seeking Seasonal Animal Care Professionals (ACPs) for the Trails of Africa Department.

The primary responsibility of our seasonal team members will be for the daily operation of our Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter. This position will work directly with members of the public in a guest interaction set up. This position ensures that guests have a positive experience when feeding our giraffe. Activities in this position will include presenting to the public in an environment that is educational, entertaining, safe, and serves to further the mission of the Birmingham Zoo.

Additionally, this position will have the opportunity to assist with and observe the daily husbandry and care of our other species in the department such as southern white rhinoceros, eastern bongo, ostrich, plains zebra, white storks, and several species of duiker. Cross training opportunities may present themselves to shadow or assist in other sections, as needed.

Preferred Start date: March or April
Seasonal Position Available: 5 months

  • Biology-related degree (or work towards) and/or animal care experience is preferred
  • Will be interacting with Zoo guests regularly; presentation skills helpful.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; high energy and enthusiasm for completion of tasks; team building skills; and the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must have ability to foster teamwork within and across teams, including other animal areas.
  • Must have a current valid driver’s license with no prior traffic violations (within the last five years).
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including Word, Excel, Microsoft Office.
  • Must have current negative TB test and provide documentation, or be willing to have a TB test.
  • Must be First aid/CPR certified or willing to be trained and certified.
