Miami Seaquarium

Aquarist or Animal Trainer


The Aquatics Department is seeking hardworking and dedicated individuals to become part of Miami Seaquarium’s team. Applications are now being accepted for full time animal care professionals that are interested in joining the Animal Training or Aquarist team. A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a zoo or aquarium facility is required.  Experience emphasizing on exhibits, animal interaction or show facility. All applicants must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays.

Miami Seaquarium opened its doors in 1955 and is one of the oldest Oceanariums in the country.  As part of the Miami Seaquarium Aquarist team, Aquarist will be exposed to all aspects of Aquarium maintenance with a collection of fish and invertebrates from Florida habitats. As a part of the Animal Training team, Trainers will be exposed to all aspects of training, daily care, and husbandry of bottlenose dolphins, sea lions and seals


  • Diet preparation

  • Vitamin and medication distribution

  • Habitat maintenance

  • Public presentations

  • Animal feeds

  • Animal encounter programs


  • Possess a 2 or 4 year degree – preferably in biology or related field Minimum of 2 years

  • Aquarist experience required (Aquarist applicants)

  • Understand/speak English

  • Be able to move/lift 50 lbs. on a daily basis

  • Must be SCUBA certified (Rescue Certification preferred for Aquarist applicants)

  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions

  • Availability to work full-time, shifts may include: evenings, weekends, and holidays, or irregular hours dictated by animal needs

  • Must pass swim test (animal training applicants)

    • Freestyle 100 yards

    • Underwater swim/breath hold 130 ft

    • Surface dive to the bottom of a 9-12 ft pool and retrieve 2 weighted objects 20-30 feet apart 15 pushups


  • CPR and lifeguard certification

  • Current IMATA membership

  • Bilingual (Spanish or Portuguese preferred)
