Indianapolis Zoo

The Indianapolis Zoo is located on a 64 acre campus in the heart of Indy's vibrant downtown area. Our millions of visitors enjoy viewing our collections, gardens, and aquariums, and learning about our animal conservation mission at our beautiful 64 acre campus in downtown Indianapolis.  Behind the scenes, our employees in the Facilities department work to keep our mechanical, building, and plumbing needs serviced and running smoothly.  Working in Facilities at a zoo presents interesting challenges and a great working environment for professional skilled trades workers.

The Indianapolis Zoo has a full-time, year-round PLUMBER position available. This position requires a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the plumbing field, a relevant trade/vocational school certification, with Backflow Certification and experience with water treatment preferred.  The ideal candidate must be proficient in all phases of plumbing repair, upgrades, maintenance and installation, and must be able to read and interpret blue prints .

This job demands 24/7 on-call availability.  Weekend work, holidays and overtime are required as needed.  Flexibility in scheduled hours is a must.  Must also possess a valid Indiana driver’s license, and have a driving record that is insurable by the Zoo’s insurance provider.

Required duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Installs, maintains, replaces, or repairs the plumbing systems and associated equipment of the Zoo according to applicable codes and guidelines. Systems include but not limited to drains, sewers, fountains, supply and returns, hot water heaters, instantaneous heaters and softeners.     
  2. Maintains PM and service records of all equipment and systems. Keeps all related blueprints updated.
  3. Must have the ability to weld, solder, and repair pipe.
  4. Performs winterization of all necessary equipment and systems as needed.
  5. Performs General Maintenance duties as assigned. Assist the Facilities department in proper maintenance of the Zoo’s buildings and structures.
  6. Works weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.  On call 24 hours a day, may be required to carry a pager.  Different shift work may be required.
  7. Must wear uniform and proper safety equipment while on duty.

This is a physically demanding position.  The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Climb ladders and scaffolding, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, walk, push, pull and lift.
  • Perform heavy duty physical work, which includes lifting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather.  Will be in a temperature range from –20 to 90+ degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Work around moving mechanical parts, live electrical circuits and will be exposed to dusty conditions.
  • May be exposed to various solvents and cleaning solutions.


  • A High School Diploma or GED is required.  Trade/Vocational School certification required.
