Assistant Curator of Fish, Herps, and Invertebrates

The Downtown Aquarium located in Houston, Texas is seeking an Assistant Curator of Fish, Herps, and Invertebrates.


  • Oversee daily operations of all animal activities.
  • Supervise staff of Biologists and manage daily department activities in the absence of Curator.
  • Have working knowledge of life support systems, animal husbandry, disease prevention, treatment and control and animal breeding and rearing techniques.
  • Perform animal and system treatments and necropsies.
  • Evaluate food requirements and diets and recommend changes.
  • Keep Curator informed of departmental progress and problems.
  • Maintain and ensure accurate record keeping.
  • Must represent The Downtown Aquarium in a professional manner with all guests.
  • Must be organized, self-motivated with eagerness to complete all projects.
  • Must be willing to participate in public education and interaction.



Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Zoology or related field is preferred. Work experience may be substituted. Must have at least five years zoological experience, preferably in an AZA accredited institution, with one year supervisory experience preferred. Must have or be able to possess valid Texas driver’s license and be SCUBA certified. Proficient in a variety of computer software applications. Experience with ZIMS record keeping preferred. Must be prepared to work weekends and holidays and be on-call for after-hours events and emergencies.
