The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk

The Maritime Aquarium inspires people of all ages to appreciate and protect the Long Island Sound ecosystem and the global environment through living exhibits, marine science, and environmental education.

Program Animal Aquarist

The Program Animal Aquarist will be responsible for the daily care and maintenance of the education and program animal collection. The Aquarist will work directly with a variety of animal species including reptiles, mammals, birds, and invertebrates.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Preferred 4 year degree in biology, zoology or a related field OR
  • Associate’s degree and minimum two years previous experience in an animal care field and knowledge of husbandry practices.
  • Previous experience handling and presenting live animals on microphone
  • Basic knowledge of exotic animal care, including but not limited to: Insects and aquatic invertebrates, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish
  • Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance of terrestrial and aquatic life support systems, including experience with water quality testing.
  • General knowledge of laboratory equipment and operating procedures.
  • Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal.
  • Able to work standing up for extended periods of time.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • SCUBA certification and collection experience preferred.
  • Outstanding customer service skills; able to represent Maritime Aquarium at all levels with professionalism and pride.
  • Ability to address student groups of all ages and aptitudes.
  • Ability to multi-task as part of a fast-paced team.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain and in all weather, able to negotiate various field conditions, able to work standing up for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work weekends and holidays, and to travel for extended periods of time for outreach or to perform collecting duties.


    Duties & Responsibilities:


  • General husbandry: diet prep, feeding, cleaning, medicating, behavioral enrichment, etc.
  • Maintains all education and ambassador aquariums/terrariums and related life support systems.
  • Report animal illness, abnormal behavior and unsafe conditions promptly and work towards corrective measures.
  • Performs water quality analysis.
  • Completes daily reports and training/enrichment logs.
  • Work with the veterinarian and animal department to ensure health and safety of education animal collection and to determine training techniques and enrichment programs.
  • Work with the Senior Aquarist to establish animal handling training and refresher classes for all education handlers
  • Interact with visitors through general interpretation and daily animal encounters at the “Sea Star Stage”
