Animal Keeper - Aquarist


Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking an Animal Keeper - Aquarist to join our Animal Husbandry team. The Animal Keeper- Aquarist’s primary areas of focus will be: (1) the care and maintenance of the aquatic animals, exhibits, and associate life support system and (2) assisting with the care of the remainder LSC animal collection. The Animal Keeper-Aquarist will report to the Animal Husbandry Director. We are looking for a detail-oriented, team player, and  skilled observer who excels at both written and oral communication. You exercise sound judgment in emergency situations and respond with appropriate action.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide and oversee care for the aquatic animal collection, totaling 20,000 gallons, with individual aquaria as large as 7,000 gallons
  • Perform daily cleaning, feedings, and operation of life support systems
  • Provide ongoing care of the remainder of the living collection, including reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, birds, and mammals
  • Maintain an intimate knowledge of animal health, exhibits, life support system operation, inventory, animal transport, quarantine procedures, species id and compatibility, and disease recognition
  • Implement high-quality standards for exhibits to ensure clean, well-organized, and hazard-free work areas
  • Perform lab work, such as regular water quality testing
  • Input and maintain accurate records of daily observations and animal care data into databases
  • Repair and maintain life support equipment, including pumps, UV sterilizers, protein skimmers, sand filters, plumbing, etc
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate interns and volunteers
  • Keep up-to-date awareness of cutting-edge animal husbandry techniques
  • Assist in the planning and operation of specimen collection trips
  • Collaborate on brainstorming, developing and producing creative solutions that serve to strengthen LSC’s brand, mission, and revenue
  • Other responsibilities, as needed


  • Knowledge of large aquarium systems including life support systems, animal husbandry, maintenance needs, and quarantine protocols
  • Previous experience with the maintenance and operation of large life support systems, including sand filters, canister filters, UV sterilizers, protein skimmers, and ozone generators is preferred.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry, biological processes, and water quality analysis.



  • Bachelor’s degree in biological or life sciences or equivalent training and experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in an aquarium or zoological facility.
  • Experience with plumbing.



  • SCUBA certification
  • Final offer contingent upon the successful outcome of a TB Test

 Supervisory Responsibilities

  • There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this role.

 Classification and Schedule

  • This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The regular schedule is Sunday-Thursday.
  • The ideal candidate must be able to work a flexible work schedule that includes occasional early mornings, evenings, holidays, and emergency response.

Physical Demands

  • This position will require significant physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching above the head, repetitive motions, lifting heavy objects (up to 60 pounds), or standing for long periods.
  • This position may require the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances.
  • This position requires the ability to withstand exposure to high levels of noises and crowds.
  • This position will involve work in wet or humid environments.
  • Candidates must have immunocompetence and be able to work in an environment with possible exposure to zoonoses.
