Interpreter

Our Interpreters facilitate various on-grounds experiences for the Zoo’s Education Department. This includes monitoring and interpreting at the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center, presenting public chats, feed demonstrations, guiding activities within the new Family Nature Center, and acting as a roving interpreter between scheduled programs.

The hourly rate for this part-time position is $11.35. The work schedule will typically be up to 3 days per week, during the summer (include weekends) and one day per week in the off season.  Daily shifts can vary with programming and attendance throughout the year.  Working on holidays and week-ends is required.

Personal passion about advancing animal conservation, both locally and globally, is a primary job responsibility of every employee at the Indianapolis Zoo.  It is the heart of who we are, and a core value of our employees.  Nationally accredited as a zoo, a botanical garden, and an aquarium, the Indianapolis Zoo is a national leader in animal conservation, a top tourist destination in the Midwest, and is located in Indy’s vibrant downtown.

During months of lower visitation, will develop interpretive projects for chats, shows and experiences, incorporating theatrical techniques to enhance experiences for on-site guests.  Conducts research for existing or new experiences, updates training materials, or inventories and replenishes supplies as needed.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE

  • Formal or informal educational institution experience required.
  • Must have working knowledge of interpretive techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in public speaking or theater is preferred.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work under pressure in a public setting.
  • Ability to assess situations and use good procedure/ judgment and follow through.
  • Electronic media/ technology experience recommended.
  • Prior experience working with the public, especially children preferred.
  • Good public speaking skills are essential.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time conducting programs.  Some work may be done outside, and will entail exposure to outside weather conditions.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess or be working towards a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education, environmental science, biology, the performing arts, or related field.
