Associate Veterinarian

Job Title: Associate Veterinarian

Job Purpose: Reporting to the Director of Veterinary Services, the Associate Veterinarian is responsible for clinical, preventive, and emergency veterinary care of the animal collection housed at Zoo Atlanta. Direct management of the veterinary clinic, veterinary technicians, and hospital / quarantine keeper may be required in the absence of the Director of Veterinary Services and/or additional Associate Veterinarian.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Actively supports and implements area policies, procedures and protocols to ensure the highest standards of care for the collection and the safety of staff and visitors
  • Provides medical and surgical care of all animals at Zoo Atlanta and/or outside agencies if called
  • Coordinates with other zoo staff in activities required for animal health maintenance
  • Maintains a preventive health program up to industry standards for all quarantined and collection animals at ZA
  • Able to respond to all veterinary related animal care issues in all weather conditions and harsh circumstances
  • Manages the daily operations of the zoo veterinary clinic and quarantine areas, including staffing, in the absence of the Director of Veterinary Services and/or other Associate Veterinarian
  • Knowledge of computers, computerized medical records and data tracking systems
  • Ability to work in an orderly fashion and maintain large databases of information, including medical records, permits, research requests, etc.
  • Must be able to function in a team environment, as well as perform tasks with minimal supervision
  • Must possess excellent communication and problem solving skills


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical veterinary care of the ZA animal collection focusing on surgery, anesthesia, emergency response, preventive health care, medical case management, and critical care
  • Teaching and direct oversight of veterinary and veterinary technology students and veterinary resident
  • Coordination and scheduling of veterinary student program
  • Participate in the training / on the job education of technicians, assistants, interns, externs, the veterinary resident, volunteers, and other staff members assigned tasks related to animal health care including but not limited to, the animal hospital, medications, animal handling and restraint, anesthesia, husbandry and emergency preparedness
  • Participate in development and implementation of standard operating procedures for animal health care and other veterinary-related procedures
  • Effectively communicate with staff of institutions and agencies related to the field and related regulatory agencies
  • Maintain animal health records up to AZA, AAZV, and USDA standards
  • Provide veterinary advice in all veterinary care related issues at ZA and/or outside agencies when requested
  • Work directly with veterinary technicians and consult with appropriate curators when needed in the daily assessment and planning of medical care for all animals in collection
  • Responsible for making sure all quarantine requirements for animals are met in a time appropriate manner
  • Interact with zoo keepers and curators to ensure animal health care is proceeding as planned
  • Participate in and train on emergency procedures
  • Participate in implementing changes in animal care as related to animal health maintenance of individual animals
  • Participate in necropsy assessments and pathology on any deceased  animals at ZA
  • Provide guidance and instruction to zoo hospital staff and animal care staff on safe handling of animals, hazardous materials, drugs, etc when you are the attending veterinarian


Minimum Job Requirements:

  • At least 3-5 years of clinical experience with exotics and/or zoo animals
  • Graduate from an AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine or attain equivalent certification to practice veterinary medicine in the US. 
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the US and the State of Georgia
  • Accredited by the USDA for health certificates and cervid TB testing
  • Federal DEA license for controlled substances in Georgia
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime when needed
  • Must be able to work outside in inclement weather conditions
  • Able to perform at a competent level under high stress conditions
  • Willingness to work in direct contact with dangerous / contagious animals as well as toxic and hazardous conditions
  • Understand zoonotic disease risks and practice safe handling / procedures when working with ZA’s animal collection
  • Must receive rabies immunizations and have titers checked and be TB tested according to ZA policy
  • Must abide by all written ZA policies and procedures
  • Class III driver license
  • Ability to pass criminal screens and random drug testing
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • ACZM diplomate status or eligibility is desirable

Zoo Atlanta is inviting qualified candidates to apply for an associate veterinarian position. This is one of three positions which directs and oversees the veterinary medical requirements and programs for our entire animal collection. The veterinary department is staffed with three full time licensed technicians and a full time Hospital Keeper/Administrative Coordinator. Zoo Atlanta offers a very active, exciting, and progressive work environment. Our 40 acre facility, with a diverse collection of over 1,200 animals representing 240+ animal species, is one of Atlanta's most visited attractions. The sought after candidate must possess the ability to successfully manage and implement a complete veterinary medicine program. Primary departmental responsibilities include, but are not limited to: perform clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical procedures, review and implement preventative care programs, develop and supervise veterinary staff, oversight and training of a veterinary resident, as well as veterinary and veterinary technician students. This position will partner with the veterinary staff and animal management team to develop and set husbandry and animal health standards for all of Zoo Atlanta’s animal collection. Other duties include maintenance of animal medical records, participation in emergency procedure reviews and standard operating procedures for the veterinary department. Minimum qualifications include a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college plus a minimum of 4 years of practical experience in veterinary medicine, preferably in zoo and/or exotic animal medicine. ACZM certification or eligibility to sit for the exam is desired as the qualified candidate will help supervise a veterinary resident, who rotates through a joint ACZM residency program between the University of Georgia, the Georgia Aquarium, and Zoo Atlanta. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with other departments and contribute to a solution oriented management style is strongly desired.
