Under general supervision of the Managers of Public Engagement and School Programs, the Museum Educator 1 (#100849 Instructor) will be responsible for the implementation and presentation of year-round science education programming. The incumbent will research and provide the highest-level of science content and accuracy for Education programs and activities appropriate for and in alignment with the Aquarium’s role as the public exploration center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), UC San Diego.

Program audiences include, but are not limited to: multi-generational groups, families, toddlers, adults, pre-K to 12 and college students, and teachers. Programming is held onsite at the Aquarium, at school sites, in the field, and in the community. Implement programs using appropriate materials, teaching strategies and standards-based curriculum. Assist in mentoring program volunteers.

  • Schedule is Monday - Friday and requires schedule flexibility to accommodate evening and weekend programs, holidays and/or special events, as needed.
  • Some programs are seasonal and/or involve outdoor, water or sea-going activities and may require lifting tanks, equipment, and handling live organisms.


  • Background checks, including National Registry of Sex Offender, FBI (live scan) and DMV are required.
  • Must have a valid CA driver's license.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification preferred and may be provided through employment.

Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18). Must meet CANRA compliance requirement per California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (“CANRA,” Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4). Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required.


  • BA or BS in marine science, environmental science, or related natural sciences or in education with science specialization; or a combination of related educational background and teaching in the subject matter; or equivalent experience.
  • One (1+) or more years of experience teaching in an informal science education institution, with a strong emphasis in science interpretation and integration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of educational program content and objectives in appropriate subject area.
  • Proven understanding of and ability to teach basic marine, Earth and atmospheric science concepts, including the nature and process of science.
  • Educational programs delivery and management skills including experience working collaboratively with a team of diverse individuals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and familiarity with best practices in teaching inquiry-based science.
  • Effective reading, verbal, written communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient computer skills with business software systems in the completion of work assignments (for example, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Strong analytical skills to work on program or targeted audience needs assessments.
  • Ability to follow directions and adhere to established guidelines and procedures.

This is a 75% career appointment for one (1) year and may be extended based on the needs of the department.
