Commissary/Animal Enrichment Internship -- Winter 2019

ZooTampa at Lowry Park is currently seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals interested in learning about the Animal Care field. 



While working in the Commissary Department, interns will learn all aspects of diet preparation for the Zoo.  Interns will be working with our Animal Behavior and Enrichment Manager designing, preparing and observing animal interactions with enrichment items.  Interns will also assist the Zoo Registrar in logging a variety of enrichment data into our system.


Internship functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist with researching and formulating novel animal enrichment ideas and devices for Animal Department use.
  • Create/construct enrichment devices based on approved requests within the Animal Department.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a database of approved animal enrichment per area and animal area grade cards to reward areas that continue to excel and work with areas that need to make improvements.
  • Prepares animal diets as instructed by Commissary Manager and Veterinarian and delivers diets to animal areas as needed.
  • Ensures quality control of all food items and goods and prepares food using proper recipes to provide consistency.
  • Responsible for maintaining proper sanitation in food preparation and keeping equipment, walk-ins, freezers and storerooms cleaned.
  • Assists with stocking, cleaning and maintaining all kitchen equipment including break-down, maintenance and restoration of equipment.
  • Follows departmental safety procedures.
  • Works with the Zoo Registrar logging data into our computer system, including scanning documents and using programs such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.


  • Working knowledge of the animal enrichment and animal behaviors of a variety of native, exotic and domestic animals.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Experience in food preparation, nutrition and record keeping is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of minor maintenance skills.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Required Availability:

  • Must be able to commit to a 14 week internship.
  • Must be able to commit to a schedule of minimum 28 hours per week.
  • Some weekend shifts may be required.

Physical Abilities:

  • Must be able to withstand typical Florida climate, sometimes temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.
  • Must be willing to work varied and long shifts including holidays and weekends.
  • Must be able to lift at least 65 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of physical positions including sitting, bending, standing, walking and driving.

Additional Requirements:

  • Candidates seeking academic credit must have arrangements agreed upon between the Zoo and their school before beginning the internship.
  • Candidate will be responsible for the cost of the background check (typically $25 but certain jurisdictions may have additional fees).
  • All offers are contingent on the successful completion of a criminal background screening and execution of a required hold harmless/liability release agreement.
  • Candidates must have documentation of a negative TB test within the last 6 months and Tetanus vaccination within the last 5 years.
  • Interns must have personal health insurance coverage for illness or injury (as volunteers and interns are not covered by the Zoo workers’ compensation program).


Internships are unpaid and are designed to meed academic requirements, as applicable, and provide valuable real-world experience for participants.  Successful completion of an internship may also yield letters of recommendation, a portfolio of their work when applicable and important networking contacts.


Who is eligible?

Applicants must be a Junior, Senior or Master's level student or recent graduate.  Applicants must submit an Internship Application, cover letter and resume in order to be considered for a position.


Please note:  Interns must make their own accommodation and transportation arrangements.  This is an unpaid internship.
