The Butterfly Garden is a living habitat of plants and butterflies which is open to the public every day. The exhibit involves a variety of horticultural and curatorial expertise to maintain the exhibit to museum standards. The educational offerings on the floor are informal, including kiosk interpretation and hands-on education. Ongoing development of new topics in insect-plant relationships are also a primary element of the exhibit.


The Butterfly Garden Intern will be involved in many different aspects of the Butterfly Garden – he or she will assist with the upkeep of the space, interact with the public, help with the live collection and provide feedback to the supervisors. The Intern will learn skills related to informal science education and management of living habitat displays.


  • Support the ongoing running of the exhibit. - Interact with the visitors to the Garden 
  • Answer questions related to Butterflies and interpret educational materials.
  • Inspect and recognize any trouble in the life support systems of the Garden, Environmental conditions, plant pest, plant and butterfly health. 
  • Conduct routine maintenance and specific horticultural and animal care duties such as, preparation of artificial butterfly diets, watering, fertilizing plants, transplanting, pruning and plant propagation.
  • Recognize and correct any butterfly containment problems.


  • Must be enrolled in Undergraduate or Graduate program.
  • Attention to detail & willingness to living collections. 
  • Interest in informal science education.
  • Self-motivated, willing to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Demonstrated Customer Service Skills.




21 hours/week (up to 28 may be possible if required by an academic program). Either Saturdays or Sundays (full 7 hours) required plus two other days/week.


$12.00/hour for undergraduate interns and $12.25/hour for interns with degrees.
