Director of Botanical Gardens

The Oklahoma City Zoological Park & Botanical Garden is a fully accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Association of Museums. The Zoo cares for a diverse collection of plants and animals on a 120-acre campus, with eleven formal gardens. We enjoy strong community support and an annual attendance in excess of 1,000,000 guests. The Oklahoma City Zoological Park & Botanical Garden is financially strong, and is actively implementing an exciting master plan.

The Oklahoma City Zoological Park & Botanical Garden is seeking an enthusiastic and progressive professional to lead the overall development and management of the botanical gardens and landscape. This position will oversee the horticulture and grounds team in creating horticultural displays that will drive attendance and further the Oklahoma City Zoo’s mission through the beautification of grounds, conservation of resources and educational programming.  The director will lead the development of a botanical masterplan which may include the development of business and recreational programs that are compatible with the objectives of the Oklahoma Zoological Trust and Oklahoma Zoological Society. The director will make it a priority to promote botanical conservation and research through scientific endeavors, and collaboration with other botanical gardens and educational institutions. This position reports to the Deputy Director/COO role and collaborates with other zoo personnel in the presentation and development of guest experiences in order to support and model the Zoo’s mission, vision and values. 

The ideal candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at all levels, Oklahoma City Zoological Trust members, Oklahoma Zoological Society officers and directors, management staff in other zoos and botanical gardens, as well as regulatory officials and various public constituencies. This individual must have a proven track record of leadership in a related institution or field, possess excellent communication and organizational skills, and have the experience and interpersonal skills to function effectively in a team environment

An advanced degree in Botany, Horticulture, or related field, and a minimum of ten years’ experience at the supervisory horticultural or landscape design/installation work involving public garden/exhibit area , or in the commercial market is required. The candidate must obtain a valid Oklahoma motor vehicle operator's license within thirty days of hire.
