Pueblo Zoo

The Pueblo Zoo is an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited facility covering twenty-five acres in Pueblo City Park. It is home to more than 500 animals representing 125 different species from around the world. Education outreach programs serve nearly every elementary school in Pueblo County, reaching thousands of children each year. Camps, on-site programming and volunteer opportunities give youth a chance to dive deeper on zoo grounds.

Section Keeper – Penguins/Otters

Performs basic animal husbandry for animals in assigned area.  Species include African penguins, North American river otters, red pandas, several birds of prey, and some small felids.  Reports to Area Supervisor (AS) as assigned.  Subject to 24-hour on call availability for emergencies.  Section keeper will assume AS duties in their absence.  This position does not rotate through the zoo.

Duties & responsibilities:

  • Know the routines for each section in area
  • Assist AS in managing animals in the area, including assisting with veterinary procedures, making adjustments to diets (with approval from curator and vet)
  • Observing and reporting animal behavior/medical concerns
  • Observing and reporting safety/maintenance needs of equipment, buildings and grounds
  • Support the AS in maintaining area in state of USDA/AZA inspection readiness
  • Support the AS in enrichment and training programs
  • Assisting in setting up animal exhibits
  • Routine handling of animals
  • Answering questions from the public in a friendly, educational manner
  • Overseeing volunteers/interns as directed
  • Assisting AS in training of new staff as directed
  • Other duties as assigned


Experience Required

Knowledge, skills, & abilities: Must possess a working knowledge of similar or related work, including assistance with veterinary procedures, ability to follow written and oral directions, ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and make decisions.  SK must possess physical strength and stamina, including lifting 50lbs, bend, climb, stoop, and reach.  Requires working directly with grass hay, alfalfa, straw, and furred/feathered animals.  SK must be able to foresee and apply safety precautions where necessary.  The position will require working weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hours assignments.  Must obtain a valid CO drivers license within 30 days. Minimum qualifications: High school diploma and 3 years zoo work experience, or 2-year college degree and 2 years work experience, or 4-year college degree and 1 year work experience (preferred).
