Animal Care Professional – Evening Shift

JOB SUMMARY

The Animal Care Professional I (ACP I) position is responsible for the evening shift husbandry activities of the Zoo animal collection. Responsibilities include performing after hours rounds in all areas and monitoring animals well-being, providing medications, reporting health problems or safety concerns, assist in the ANC, feed and clean certain animals and monitor/secure other areas of the zoo.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • At beginning of shift, make rounds meeting with animal areas, vet staff and operations to be given direction and access priority needs for the evening.
  • Will monitor building heating/cooling needs. Make sure building are locked and secured.
  • Round to each animal area making sure all closing protocol has been met and locks secured.
  • As directed by vet staff, dispense medications if needed.
  • Follow instructions from previous shift on any animal care/husbandry needed after hours. Displays and demonstrates the basic biology, behaviors and husbandry of the animals in the daily routine.
  • Will assist with after hour Zoo events and Programs as needed or directed.
  • May clean and maintain animal holdings, including the use of chemical agents and special tools to assure the health and safety of the animals.
  • Uses proper techniques in shifting animals when assigned.
  • Identifies, recognizes and reports any abnormal behavior of animals.
  • Monitors weather related needs for the animals and shelters animals appropriately. Calls in other staff to help if needed.
  • Identifies, documents, and properly communicates any animal medical problems to the Curator and Veterinary staff in a timely manner.
  • Assists with assignments for animal immobilizations if needed.
  • Develops and maintains a good line of communication with the various area Zoological Managers and Curator(s) to ensure that all facilities and animals are in good order, and that all problems are reported.
  • Utilizes the Environmental Enrichment Program if asked to provide enrichment for animal(s).
  • Properly utilizes the animal record keeping systems if needed.
  • Documents any abnormal animal behaviors or issues on the Daily Report.
  • Responsible for capturing, crating, and transferring animals using appropriate restraint and handling techniques designed to put the least amount of stress on the animal.
  • Prepares and presents Public Animal Talks to Zoo visitors and guests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Degree, some college preferred
  • At least three years advanced experience in a generalist animal care role.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team; Must be self-directed and self-motivated
  • Must have an understanding and appreciation for BZI’s mission.
  • Must have a current valid driver’s license with no prior traffic violations (within the last five years).
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including Word, Excel, Microsoft Office.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; have high energy and enthusiasm for completion of tasks; possess team building skills; and has the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must have ability to foster teamwork within and across teams.
  • Must have good presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Must have current negative TB test and rabies titer and provide documentation, or be willing to have a TB test and rabies titer.
  • Must be First aid/CPR certified or willing to be trained and certified.

POSITION TYPE AND HOURS OF WORK

  • Full time
  • Hours of work will vary slightly due to season, ranging from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Weekdays and weekends required with occasional holidays.
