Part-time Veterinary Technician/Assistant

The part-time vet tech position will be responsible for maintaining quarantine and caring for animals in quarantine, maintaining medical records, maintaining and cleaning veterinary equipment, performing routine diagnostic tests, and helping with medical procedures.

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • General husbandry and care of quarantine animals.
  • Perform routine maintenance on veterinary equipment.
  • Perform routine diagnostic tests.
  • Set up and break down for medical procedures.
  • Basic understanding of how to take vitals and interpret vital trends during procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic anesthetic monitoring equipment.
  • Close observation of animal behaviors to monitor health of animals.
  • Shift animals according to area’s safety protocol.
  • Assist in animal procedures including translocations, immobilizations, crating, and veterinary procedures.
  • Advanced animal catching, restraint and handling techniques.
  • Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals.
  • Propose and perform species-specific enrichment.
  • Knowledge of husbandry requirements, and the prevention of zoonotic diseases.
  • Knowledge of operant training.
  • Interact with guests in informal discussions.
  • Report animal illness, maintenance, safety, horticulture, or other needs to appropriate staff.
  • Respond to and assist management in guiding the resolution of emergency situations within the zoo.
  • Knowledge of zoo’s layout and animal collection to respond quickly during animal emergencies.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, safety concerns, and reporting protocols.
  • Observe safety policies and procedure.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Minimum 18 years old. • Must be able to work as part of a team. • Must be self-motivated and goal-oriented. • Must be able to use a bicycle • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential. • Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. A veterinary technician degree or college degree in a biological science is preferred. Experience in a zoological environment is desirable.
