Animal Intern - Ruwenzori (Seasonal)

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under direction and alongside trained keeper staff, the Animal Intern performs routine work assignments involving the care of Zoo animals, as well as maintenance of exhibits, enclosures, service and animal holding areas. This position performs related work as required.

This position will work with the Ruwenzori team, which is responsible for the daily husbandry of a variety of African animals, including chimpanzees, river hippopotamus, slender-snouted crocodiles, kori bustards, African spurred tortoises, leopard tortoises, Guinea baboons, African painted dogs, yellow-billed storks and crowned cranes.

This is a seasonal position, typically running May 1st-September 1st. Start and end dates can vary based upon school schedule and individual availability.

POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists with the daily care of assigned team’s animal collection, including:

  • Preparing diets.
  • Cleaning animal exhibits, service and holding areas.
  • Learning about daily observation of animal health and welfare.
  • Reporting births, deaths, injuries and/or irregular animal behavior to appropriate manager.
  • Assisting in basic husbandry, animal shows and preparing/giving of enrichment, as directed.

70%

Assists with daily maintenance of exhibits and holding areas, including:

  • Reporting maintenance issues and potential safety hazards to appropriate manager.
  • Performing minor repairs and improvements of exhibits, under supervision.

20%

Interacting with Zoo guests and the public, including:

  • Answering visitors’ questions about the Zoo and animals, as necessary.
  • Doing public speaking for animal chats, shows and media, when assigned.

10%

*This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:
    1. Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in biological science or related field preferred.
    2. High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate accepted.
  2. EXPERIENCE:
    1. Basic knowledge of animal behavior preferred.
    2. Strong observation skills, in order to recognize and evaluate conditions of animal health, diets and behavior.
    3. Experience understanding and following oral and written instructions, including procedures for care and maintenance of animals, exhibit, service and holding areas.
    4. Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  3. OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Must have valid driver’s license.
    2. Must have or be able to obtain negative TB test.
    3. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and have sufficient mobility.
    4. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
    5. Must be able to tolerate stress and make immediate decisions concerning the safety of animals, employees or the public.
    6. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
    7. Must pass a background and drug screening.
