Zoo Camp After-Care Assistant -Summer 2019- Temporary, Part-Time

The San Francisco Zoological Society (“Society”) is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens (“Zoo”).  The Society’s mission, supra, is summarized as the 3 c’s: to connect our visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it.  The Society’s leadership team is comprised of a President & Executive Director as well as a professional team of Senior Managers. The Society endeavors to meet or exceed the standards of its industry peers, including those established by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (“AZA”). For over 25 years, the Society has been continuously accredited by the AZA.

SUMMARY: The candidate in this position will support the mission of the San Francisco Zoo by inspiring our youngest guests to connect, care and conserve through the popular summer Zoo Camp program. Zoo Camp is a daytime program that reaches approximately 2,000 children ages 4-17. The primary responsibility of the Zoo Camp After-Care Assistant is to provide a fun and safe experience for Zoo Camp participants enrolled in extended care.  An ideal candidate is creative, enthusiastic, hardworking and has a strong interest in working with children.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Upholds the Society’s mission, core values and other policies/procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook and elsewhere.

  1. Supervises Zoo Camp After-Care participants.
  2. Prepares and organizes materials needed for the After-Care program.
  3. Designs and facilitates simple educational games and activities, using available resources.
  4. Ensures an efficient and safe camper pick-up process.
  5. Assists with communication between daytime Camp Instructor and adults at pick-up.
  6. Maintains a clean and organized After-Care area.
  7. Provides excellent customer service to Zoo Camp families.
  8. Communicates parent concerns to the Zoo Camp management in a timely fashion.
  9. Ensures the safety of campers, staff and guests at all times.
  10. Other duties, as assigned by Zoo Camp or Education management.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. COMMITMENT:

  • Ability to work part-time, Monday through Friday, for the entire camp season from June to mid-August.

            EDUCATION:

  • College level coursework in early childhood, and/or education preferred.
    EXPERIENCE:
  • Some experience working with children (formal or informal teaching, babysitting, camps, tutoring, coaching, lessons, etc.)
  • Ability to present information to groups.
  • Successful completion of a background check and fingerprinting.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • The San Francisco Zoo encourages bilingual candidates to apply.
  • Experience with children, particularly those with special needs a plus.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • Ability to work well collaboratively and manage time efficiently.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend, squat, talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands for grasping, fine work and assembly, reaching, kneeling, or twisting.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, use hands to push/pull, crawl, taste, or smell.  The employee must frequently lift up to 25 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often exposed to outdoor weather conditions. 

Salary: $15.00/hour

Note: After-Care Assistants are expected to work all assigned weeks unless specific days off are approved by the Program Manager prior to employment.


Summer Zoo Camp will run Monday through Friday from June 10th through August 16th, 2019.  Training will take place the week of June 3rd. This is a part-time position; hours are 3:30pm - 6:00pm, but flexibility is appreciated.
