Tracy Aviary

Aviculture Intern

The Tracy Aviary is now hiring for Aviculture Internship positions starting in April. This internship is 6 months long and designed to provide training for career-focused individuals in preparation for an entry level zoo keeping position or similar animal husbandry position.

Under direct supervision of bird care staff, intern job duties will include:

  • Learning basic husbandry procedures including daily cleaning, feeding, and diet preparation

  • Providing scheduled enrichment

  • Following specific breeding protocols

  • Learning to work safely around all birds

  • Demonstrating proper capture and restraint techniques

  • Observing or participating in basic husbandry training

  • Assisting with medical procedures

  • Maintaining exhibits

  • Providing medical care and treatments

  • Participating in guest interaction through keeper talks, sun conure feedings and pelican feedings

In addition to the hands-on training received on a daily basis, all interns will attend intern classes taught by our skilled staff. Classes include avian anatomy and physiology, exhibit preparation, medical procedures, artificial incubation, record keeping, training, and public speaking.

Interns work 7:30am - 4:00pm, working 40 hours a week with two days off in a row. Tracy Aviary provides off-site housing and a small monthly stipend.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in zoology or related field from an accredited college or university.

Three months experience working with animals in a captive or research setting (zoological institutions, wildlife rehabilitation, veterinary clinics, conservation field work)
