George Benz Aquatic Ecology Fellowship


Thank you for your interest in the summer George Benz Aquatic Ecology fellowship at the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute! The Aquarium hopes this experience will help guide and empower conservation-minded students to develop solutions to complex conservation challenges in our communities and gain valuable hands-on work experience. Our history of giving high-potential students the opportunity to work at our Aquarium has shown that such professional experience opens new career options for students from all walks of life.


As part of your fellowship, you will develop and conduct independent research in support of ongoing projects at the Conservation Institute including community ecology, ecotoxicology, and conservation status of southeastern fishes, salamanders, and turtles. You will also assist with fieldwork and lab analyses conducted by Conservation Institute science staff.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Conduct independent research in southeastern aquatic conservation biology
  2. Prepare scientific presentation to be presented to Aquarium staff at end of summer       
  3. Assist with propagation of Lake Sturgeon, Brook Trout and other live animals as needed
  4. Interact with Conservation Institute science staff to support ongoing research projects
  5. Occasionally assist with education and conservation science outreach programs
  6. Perform field work and other duties as needed


Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • College experience with background in biological sciences preferred
  • Background knowledge in aquatic ecology preferred
  • Good working knowledge of computers, frequent use of Excel and Word
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision, and as part of a team


Seasonal, hourly. 40 hours/week from May 20th through July 26th (dates flexible); weekend and holiday work may be required
