Position:  School Programs Manager  

 

Reports To: Director of Education 

 

Position Summary:  

The School Programs Manager (SPM) oversees the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium (LLPA) informal science field trip and outreach programs. This includes ensuring that the programs are aligned with the Utah Core Curriculum (as mandated by the state), achieve LLPA mission goals and KPI, and oversight of day-to-day management of the LLPA School Programs Staff and program. The SPM will be responsible for managing existing programs and designing new ways to make the programs interesting, fun, and educational in order to ensure students and teachers of Utah have an exceptional experience when participating in any of the school programs or when interacting with the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium. The SPM works closely with the Director of Education and other LLPA Education Leadership to further the mission of the aquarium throughout the state. 
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Model excellence and leadership through the LLPA Five-Keys.
  • Responsible for overseeing the delivery and development of programs and supervising day-to-day activities and team performance.
  • Enhancing the quality of existing programs by evaluating and assessing the programs’ strengths and weaknesses.
  • Identify opportunities for continual improvement in program offerings and team performance.
  • Consult with the Director of Education to initiate, develop, and oversee the creation of new educational content or programs.
  • Supervise, train and guide team members.
  • Ensure that all members understand the team’s objectives and work together to achieve it.
  • Foster a cohesive, creative, and comfortable working environment, providing leadership and direction where necessary.
  • Establish a weekly schedule, monitor hours, approve payroll data for the school programs Education staff.
  • Provide regular feedback to staff and conduct regular reviews, including 90-Day, Annual and mid-year reviews for School Programs staff.  
  • Monitor projects and oversee team leads to ensure program goals are met and staff maintain a high-level of quality in their performance.
  • Display and model excellence in program presentations and be able to conduct presentations in the absence of another trained team member
  • Lead the Outreach program, including scheduling daily outreach programs, plan and organize trips to schools across Utah, manage and balance the Education Petty Cash budget, process receipts and expense reports.
  • Lead the Field Trip program, including scheduling onsite school visits, classroom programs, and answer inquiry emails and phone calls from teachers looking to plan a field trip to LLPA.
  • Manage the safety and maintenance of outreach transportation fleet of vans.
  • Assist Director of Education in devising budgets, annual plans, and improve department strategies.
  • Collaborate and work closely with other departments as assigned for project development and general operations.
  • Attend approved professional development opportunities to improve education department capabilities. Out of state travel may be required. 
  • Collaborate with organizations outside of LLPA to create partnerships, expand program opportunities and enhance existing educational content. 
  • Participate in fundraising, public relations, and the promotion of the organization as needed. 
  • Future responsibilities for this role may include teacher professional development programs or other programs associated with schools, teachers, or students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Education. 

 

Education:  

  • Bachelor`s degree required in biology, zoology, marine science, environmental science, science education, or related fields; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in team management and development required; 2+ years of experience preferred.
  • Experience in formal or informal science (or STEM) education for K-12 preferred, with demonstrated experience in program development and evaluation; (3+ years)
  • Experience in entertainment/hospitality venues (zoos, aquariums, theme parks) a plus.
  • Bilingual fluency, especially in Spanish/English, a plus.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all current school programs.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Utah state science standards and requirements.

 

Physical Demands of the Job:  

This job requires extended periods of standing as well as extended periods of sitting with data entry. During occasional presentations, periods of high energy and enthusiasm are essential.  
 
 
 

Special Working Conditions:  

Job will primarily be in an office environment. LLPA is open 363 days a year, seven days a week. Schedule may include weekends, evenings, and holidays (excluding Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day). Periodic weekend or evening work and some holidays is expected. The overall work environment while performing this job includes exposure to weather conditions and the noise level is usually moderate. The employee is expected to adhere to all policies and to act as a role model in the adherence to the policies.
