Calgary, AB – The Calgary Zoo announced that its new male western lowland gorilla, “Jasiri”, has finished his 3-month quarantine and made his public debut in the TransAlta Rainforest.
The zoo released a short video about Jasiri’s journey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opcMmvp_QY4&feature=youtu.be
“Our Animal Care team has gotten to know Jasiri over the past 3-months, and he has stolen our hearts”, said Jamie Dorgan Director of Animal Care for the Calgary Zoo. “Introductions with our five female gorillas will take place slowly over the next few months. We appreciate our visitors’ patience when we occasionally close the building for short periods of time to give the troop space and quiet for these introductions.”
Jasiri was born at Zoo Atlanta on June 21, 1998 and arrived at the Calgary Zoo in mid-June after many years of planning and preparation. The previous Silverback, “Kakinga”, lived at the Calgary Zoo for 32-years before his death from age-related causes in Spring 2016.
In the wild, western lowland gorillas are found in the forests of Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Central African Republic and are critically endangered.
The wild population is decreasing significantly every year due to habitat loss, mining, poaching and disease. Everyone can help them by reducing, reusing and then recycling mobile phones and other electronics such as laptops, game consoles, cameras and tv screens.
