Mote’s Animal Hospitals Thank Sara Roberts Foundation for Generous GrantJun 25, 2013
Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium recently received a grant for $123,000 from the Sara Roberts Foundation to support rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick and injured marine animals. The funds will provide operating support for Mote’s hospitals for dolphins, whales and sea turtles.
This is the second grant awarded to Mote’s animal hospitals by the Sara Roberts Foundation, a Sarasota-based family foundation that supports animal protection and welfare.
“We recognize the value of Mote Marine Lab’s research and animal care, and we consider them an integral part of our community,” said George Famiglio, Jr., Trustee of the Sara Roberts Foundation. “We are more than happy to support Mote’s hospitals in any way we can.”
As an independent, nonprofit marine research institution, Mote depends on local support for many of its science, education and outreach efforts.
“We at the hospital greatly appreciate this generous contribution,” said Lynne Byrd, Rehabilitation and Medical Care Coordinator of Mote’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital and Mote’s Dolphin and Whale Hospital. “Without continued support like this, we could not sustain our commitment to successfully rehabilitate and release these animals. Thank you for helping us to help them.”
Mote’s animal hospitals have treated 70 dolphins and whales since 1992, along with 430 sea turtles since 1995.
