Virginia Aquarium Names New Director of Exhibits & Animal Husbandry Aug 30, 2010
Jeffrey L. Mahon, Ph.D., joins the Virginia Aquarium Leadership Team as the new Director of Exhibits and Animal Husbandry August 16. Dr. Mahon was selected through a national search and consideration of more than 80 qualified candidates.
Dr. Mahon’s experience includes serving as Curatorial Director of four facilities in Southeast Asia: Underwater World Singapore; Dolphin Lagoon (Singapore); Underwater World Pattaya (Thailand); and Chengdu Hawpar Oceanarium (China). He was the General Curator and Facilities Manager at Underwater World Guam and earlier the Assistant Curator at Underwater World Singapore. Additional professional experience includes 26 years of service in the United States Navy, first as an active duty nuclear fast attack submarine Division Officer, and the latter 20 years as a Reserve Officer at various commands, including positions as Commanding Officer and Executive Office. He retired with the rank of Commander.
A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Dr. Mahon received his Ph.D. in Zoology with a concentration in Reef Fish Behavioral Ecology from the University of Hawaii. As a graduate student, he received several awards. Dr. Mahon is a published researcher and he has presented findings at a variety of conferences.
As the Virginia Aquarium Director of Exhibits and Animal Husbandry, Dr. Mahon will manage the daily operations of both live animal and scientific exhibits. This includes 800,000 gallons of aquariums, nearly 300 interactive exhibits, a nature trail and aviary.
