On The Cover
The cover shows Circe, a ten-year old black rhino looking over her female calf, Ayana. Ayana is Circe’s second offspring and the 14th black rhino born at Zoo Miami. Circe was born at the Riverbanks Zoo and came to Miami via the Los Angeles Zoo on breeding loan. The father is 27-year old Toshi, born at the Asa Zoological Park in Japan and arrived in Miami from Hiroshima in 1983. This birth is the result of a carefully planned recommendation from the Black Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan® (SSP) and is an excellent example of several zoos, both nationally and internationally, working together in an effort to preserve one of the world’s most endangered species.
