This position advances the mission of Denver Zoo by collaborating with all zoo departments to produce dynamic and engaging electronic and print publications. This person will meet regularly with stakeholders and contributors to develop story ideas while ensuring high writing and editing standards. This position is responsible for the zoo’s social media coordination and supports the department’s video and photo production needs.

Essential Functions:

•Supports Denver Zoo’s mission through strategic communications to achieve departmental goals.

•Coordinates messaging and scheduling of social media outreach.

•Collects information from departments as content aggregator for internal communications.

•Writes, edits and produces zoo’s e-bulletin, “Zoo News.”

•Writes for, edits and assists in the production of the zoo’s membership publication, “Alive.”

•Produces other print communication products as assigned.

•Consults with management to help analyze the effectiveness of current zoo publications and recommend strategies to improve communications to Denver Zoo stakeholders.

•Works with liaisons to develop stories and ensure content accuracy.

•Writes dynamic and engaging stories and other content for zoo publications.

•Fact checks and approves copy of publication content.

•Ensures publications meet brand and style standards.

•Develops enticing web content to encourage more online interaction.

•Schedules, produces and installs on-site promotional banners.

•Writes press releases as assigned.

•Supports Communications Department with media events.

•Supports Events Team with large scale events including set up and tear down.

•Supports Director of Communications and PR Manager with on call media duties.

•Assists with photo and video projects.

Additional Responsibilities:

•Performs various tasks as assigned.


•Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or related field.

•Previous experience in public relations, communications, or journalism is preferred.

•Maintain a flexible schedule including holidays, weekends and evenings to assure coverage with a standard Tuesday through Saturday work week.

•Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel and the Internet.

•Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

•Must be an energetic person willing to work in teams and individually.

•Proficiency with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

•Knowledge of HTML and web editing software preferred.

•Video production experience (shooting and editing video news releases) and knowledge of Final Cut Pro editing preferred.

•Excellent customer services skills.

•Strong verbal and written communication skills.

•Ability to handle multiple projects at one time.

•Strong organizational skills.

•Ability to lift 30 pounds on a regular basis.
