Provides all aspects of animal care for species in the area. Participates in operant conditioning training and husbandry programs, animal enrichment, and exhibit maintenance and improvements. Prepares and conducts educational presentation and tours for zoo guests. Leads projects as assigned and provides training guidance to Keeper I’s.


• Takes direction from superiors, including Keeper III.

• Closely observes and monitors animals for health and behavioral issues.

• Thoroughly communicates daily status of animals in writing and verbally to coworkers, supervisors, curator and veterinarian. Responsible for medicating animals as directed and participating in veterinary procedures.

• Prepares and presents diets as directed. Also, provides rotating and appropriate enrichment for animals.

• Performs operant conditioning and husbandry for animals as trained and assigned.

• Follows protocols and operating procedures to maintain a high level of animal care and safety.

• Cleans exhibits and holding areas to maintain a high level of sanitation.

• Trains and provides guidance to new keepers and volunteers.

• Leads team projects and conducts minor repairs to exhibits and holding. Also, participates in exhibit renovation and improvement projects.

• Conducts facility and vehicle inspections as assigned.

• Communicates with and assists vendors and zoo guests as needed. Works cooperatively with zoo staff.

• Supports zoo research projects.

• Follows zoo wide and area safety protocols and understands the keeper’s role in emergency procedures.

• Responsible for aiding and communicating with the Research Department.

• Actively encourages public interest in elephants through educational presentations, public relations and tours.

• Completes Keeper and Animal Training Programs

• Responsible for attending required zoo safety and environmental training.

• Other duties as assigned.


• Must have Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

• 2 years elephant husbandry experience preferred.

• Must have knowledge of elephant animal husbandry, history and behavior as well as in the care and exhibiting of elephants.

• Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Must be able to work well with employees, volunteers, the board of directors, VIP visitors, veterinarians, the public, community representatives, private groups and organizations.

• Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Must have good observational skills.

• Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull bend, climb stairs and ladders and carry up to 50lbs.

• Must be able to work holidays and weekends.

• Must be able to actively work in inclement weather.

• Must have a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation

Successful candidates must pass pre-employment drug screening, background check and TB test.
