Zoological Manager Primates

The Birmingham Zoo is currently seeking a working Zoological Manager for its Primate department. The successful candidate should have a strong background in Primate Husbandry and exemplary leadership abilities. This individual will supervise the keeper staff responsible for all aspects of animal care including, but not limited to, cleaning, feeding, watering, training, observing, record keeping, and maintaining of exhibits. They will oversee the implementation of training and behavioral enrichment programs, manage work assignments, and coordinate staffing levels of area personnel. Should be able to respond to emergencies, take control of situations, and see them through to closure. They must have the ability to work as a team member and to interact with the guests in a positive manner. The successful candidate must be able to represent management and demonstrate a commitment to the Zoo's mission statement and its' values.


Minimum of three years’ experience required; supervisory experience preferred. Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, or related field. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must demonstrate excellent observational and record keeping skills along with advanced skills in animal training. Possess extensive knowledge and implementation of animal enrichment practices. Must have strong team building and people management skills. Membership in AZA is expected. Membership in AAZK and graduation from AZA Management School is preferred.
