The Greensboro Science Center is currently recruiting for the position of Aquarium Curator. The aquarium (“SciQuarium”) is a new 23,000 sq. ft. aquarium facility which is part of a larger campus that also includes a zoological park, science museum, numerous theaters, and aerial park (in development). The Greensboro Science Center is both AZA and AAM accredited, and is in the midst of a period of dynamic growth and renewal that is drawing visitors in record numbers.

As a facility, the SciQuarium is a celebration of animals inhabiting marine and aquatic environments. Exhibits include fishing cats, otters, penguins, Amazon, and stingray touch pool (note: bird and mammal husbandry is the responsibility of zoo staff). The largest tank is a 90,000 gal. “Shark Reef” containing three species of sharks and numerous reef fish. Funding is in place for creating additional exhibits (Curator will help design) in the aquarium, and in a new children’s aquatic area under development.

The Curator leads a team of four aquarists to manage all aspects of fish husbandry and LSS operation. The Curator should be competent in a number of areas including water quality testing and treatment, fish health, elasmobranch management, LSS operation and maintenance, exhibit diving, leadership, record-keeping to AZA standards, departmental purchasing, and staff supervision. This is a hands-on (feet wet) curator position; curators are expected to frequently work alongside aquarists. The Curator reports directly to the V.P. Visitor Experiences.

Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree from accredited college/university (marine science, biology, chemistry, or related field) and minimum of four years experience in a paid position at a public aquarium performing relevant duties. Applicants must be SCUBA certified (advanced certifications preferred) with significant exhibit diving experience. Applicants must have the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs., climb ladders, work in confining spaces, and tolerate wet and humid environments.

Salary range is commensurate with experience, with a starting range of $38,000-$42,500 and an excellent benefit package. The GSC operates under a profit-sharing ethic and strives to provide annual employee performance bonuses and/or raises based generated revenues and growth.
