Job Description: Hours of work are 7-1/2 hrs/day, 4 days/week for a total of 30 hours weekly.Weekend days off vary. Expected employment begin date June 1, 2014 and end date September 2, 2014.
Responsibilities for the Entomologist Student Worker include care and maintenance of butterflies and moths, caterpillars and pupae that are contained in the butterfly hoop house, interacting with visitors throughout the day, and providing interpretive information about the hoop house exhibit as well as general information about the Zoo. Position is responsible for crowd control, supervising visitor interaction with butterflies to prevent injury, death and escape of butterflies.
Duties to include:
-Daily maintenance of insect collection and butterfly hoop house
-Interact with Zoo volunteers and guests while supervising the Butterfly Garden
-Provide interpretive information to Zoo volunteers and guests
-Monitor the garden area to prevent damage, butterfly/moth escapees, pest
-Accurate record keeping
-Reply to pertinent correspondence
-Assist with reference work or additional tasks as needed
-Provide daily care of caterpillars
-Inspect butterfly pupa shipments and hang pupa in emersion boxes
-Maintain USDA APHIS containment guidelines
-Control guest traffic in and out of the exhibit
Minimum Qualifications: Must be a full-time college student taking coursework in biology, entomology, or closely related. Must be able to perform interpretation. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must have excellent communication and human relations skills.
