Part Time Science Educator - $12.15 per hour:• Science Educators are the front-line teachers of education programs – targeting children and adults – run out of The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. The Aquarium’s education department develops and presents programming that increases understanding of the biological world and facilitates the stewardship of natural environments, with a specific focus on Long Island Sound.
Essential Functions• Assume role of lead educator in presenting classroom, exhibit gallery-based and field-based programs targeting children and adults representing a range of ages. Includes duties related to: o Class preparation / set-up / take-down;o Teacher communication;o The presentation of prepared curricula utilizing a variety of educational aids (e.g. live animals, audio/visual equipment, artifacts, microscopes, dissecting kits);o The organization, inventorying and restocking of education materials and supplies.• Attends all required staff training and meetings.• Assumes administrative duties related to time accounting and program evaluation / data collection.• Part Time Educators are required to teach at the Aquarium, on travels (to schools) and in the field. Required Qualifications• Current college undergraduate student, college graduate or graduate student majoring in a natural science field (i.e. biology, life, physical, earth sciences) and/or an education field (e.g. general education, environmental education, museum education) • Experience as a teacher, docent, performing artist or similar.• Experience working with pre-kindergarten/kindergarten, elementary and/or middle school-aged children.• Strong written and verbal English skills.• Strong time management, organizational and interpersonal skills.• Ability to lift 60 pounds and work in a variety of natural environments (e.g. forests, stream/river habitats and coastal habitats) in a range of weather conditions.• Ability to work efficiently, independently and meet deadlines.• Ability to effectively supervise young students in a variety of environments and respond appropriately to emergency situations.• Competency using the Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).• Must be available some weekend days during the month and at least 3 – 4 weekdays during business hours.Desired Qualifications• Knowledge of local marine flora fauna and/or flora.• Current driver’s license with a clean driving record.• Ability to speak, write and comprehend Spanish.• Experience working on boats and/or an ability and willingness to conduct programs from boating platforms. Includes the assumption of duties related to safety, maintenance, scientific sampling, and environmental data collection (e.g. line handling, hauling anchors, working with a variety of water, plankton, sediment, fish and other sampling gear).
