Seasonal Aviculture Keeper

Position Summary: This position encompasses skilled professional and technical work in the routine daily care of assigned animals, enclosures and related facilities of exhibit and off-exhibit bird holding areas within the Aviculture Department. Position is 5 days/week, Weds-Sunday schedule, with flexibility as dept needs change, and has the potential to last into the Fall of 2014.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Clean animal displays, holding areas, service areas, public sections and grounds; Maintain records of health, behavior, enrichment; Perform behavior modification and enrichment programs in assigned areas; Assist in the training, supervision, evaluation of volunteers, interns, and vocational students, as needed; Assist animal health and curatorial staff with animal handling, capture, restraint, transport and medication administration; Develop and present visitor engagement programs that include, but are not restricted to, random encounters, educational programs and Meet-the-Keeper programs.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have demonstrated knowledge and successful experience in avian husbandry and knowledge of operant conditioning & animal handling techniques; previous experience with various avian taxa is expected. Applicants must have knowledge of bird husbandry, including feeding and nutrition, common bird diseases, capture and restraint, and knowledge of basic biology including physiology, ecology and behavior. Successful applicants must demonstrate excellent communication and problem solving processes, while applying good judgment, to deliver animal care and guest experiences that meet the highest standards. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers (includes staff, interns, students and volunteers) and public in a professional and courteous manner. Candidate must be comfortable with guest interactions and in delivering public presentations, including daily keeper encounters.
Working Conditions: Employment is contingent upon passing a post-offer, pre-employment drug & nicotine screen. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; climb or balance and grasp objects. In addition, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; Must be able to lift & move 50 pounds without mechanical assistance; possess a valid driver’s license (and insurable to drive a Zoo vehicle). Ability to work a flexible schedule (including holidays, weekends and evenings) is required.
