Job Summary:
Under general supervision of the Zoo Director, this position is responsible for the management of the animal collection, personnel, facilities and programs related to the Great Bend – Brit Spaugh Zoo and Raptor Center. This position is FLSA non-exempt. Drug testing is not applicable.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general supervision of the Zoo Director, performs supervisory and manual work related to the development and maintenance of the zoo and zoo grounds.
A. Aids the Zoo Director in programs of animal care and treatment, including the Raptor Center.
B. Aids the Zoo Director in supervision of all employees working for the zoo and raptor center.
C. Aids the Zoo Director in programs of construction and maintenance of the zoo and raptor center.
D. The curator will perform keeper duties as needed throughout Zoo and manage non-routine events and insure emergency response preparedness.
E. Work in conjunction with other staff members to fulfill the Zoo’s strategic and master plans.
F. May participate in research activities.
G. Assist with the acquisition and disposition of the wildlife collection.
H. Conducts zoo tours, presentations, and outreach programs.
I. Maintains all necessary records appropriate for the zoo.
J. Assists in coordinating special events and projects for the zoo.
K. Assist in zoo design.
L. Public and Media interaction. Including television, newspaper, and radio.
M. Manages the daily activities of the commissary including purchasing, processing, distribution of diets, coordinating with the Veterinarians, and adhering to USDA and AZA diet preparation regulations and guidelines.
N. Assists in the development of husbandry policies and procedures which incorporate animal training and environmental enrichments.
O. Participating in AZA and other professional organizations.
P. Follow all guidelines and regulations set by AZA.
Q. Serve as an ambassador for the City of Great Bend as well as the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, supporting and conducting efforts to promote conservation and education.
A. Ability to provide appropriate supervision to zoo employees.
B. Knowledge of animal husbandry, history and behavior as well as care and exhibition of exotic and domestic animals.
C. Knowledge of record keeping and collection planning.
D. Effective communication skills and ability to work well with employees, volunteers, veterinarians, the public, community representatives and private groups and organizations.
E. Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Preference given to a minimum of an A.S. degree in the applied sciences, animal science, agriculture, zoology or related field, with four years of zoo keeper experience and two years professional experience in animal management, or two years personnel management experience and active participation in conservation efforts.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed both inside and out. Involves public contact. Inside work will involve physical activity associated with working in an office setting. Outside work is occasionally heavy and may involve physical activity such as lifting, pulling, pushing, carrying, and involves handling, seeing, hearing, listening, and talking. May involve after hour calls and exposure to extreme weather conditions. Also involves working with and around animals. May be exposed to toxic fumes and some hazardous materials.
