Zoo Camp Counselor

Summary of Duties: Counselors help the instructors with the preparation of camp activities, games, crafts, tours, etc, and assist with the check-in and sign-out procedures each day. Additionally, Counselors will conduct on-grounds education programming and interact with zoo camp guests on a daily basis, providing information about habitats, wildlife and conservation.

Distinguishing Features: Counselors help to implement the Zoo’s educational programming by facilitating activities, and presenting accurate information to campers. The hours are varied. Employees will be assigned to work weekdays and/or holidays.

Examples of Duties: The wide variety of duties includes helping instructors prepare activities and crafts for each day. Assist instructor with child management. Effectively communicate with parents. Maintain a clean classroom space, snack and craft area. Set up area for drop-off/pick-up, including registration sheets. When needed, positively interact with zoo guests out on zoo grounds. Assist with the preparation and delivery of camp programs and other Education Programs as assigned.

Qualifications: Counselors must have an appreciation for environmental education and a commitment to conservation. Additionally, candidate must also have a willingness to work around animals, including reptiles, mammals, birds, and insects. A background in biology, zoology, education or psychology a plus. High school diploma required. Previous experience working with kids is preferred. Bilingual is a plus.

Must be available for orientation on Saturday, June 7th, for a week of training from June 9th – June 13th, and for the entire duration of summer camp from June 16th - August 8th.

Must be available to work weekdays and holidays.

Physical Requirements: Strength to perform average lifting of less than 5 pounds and occasionally over 15 pounds; body agility and equilibrium for activities including touring and games; back and leg coordination for activities involving stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Zoo Camp requires daily walks (a minimum of 30-45 minutes) through the Zoo and may walk 2 or more miles per day.
