Summary of Duties: Instructs the camps within the general recreation program at ZooCamp; supervises campers in an assigned camp; leads group in organized activities and tours.

Distinguishing Features: Works under the general supervision of the Camp Director (or Education Curators), and is assigned to a camp in which there normally are 15 to 20 campers. The work consists of instructing the campers and developing rapport with the campers to ensure a productive, creative and enjoyable camp experience.

Examples of Duties: Lead tours, teach campers (preschool-6th grade) pre-developed curriculum (some development may be required). Each camp allows campers to identify various plants and animals throughout the zoo. Work closely with camp counselors and direct their daily activities. Plan and present programs, supervise game time, set up necessary equipment and supplies; assist with the general maintenance of the camp area; assist in taking inventories of craft and snack supplies. Maintain communication with parents/ guardians.

Qualifications: Previous experience instructing children required. At least 2 years of college with background in education, biology, zoology or psychology is required. Instructors must have an appreciation for environmental education and a commitment to conservation and animal welfare. Instructors must also have a willingness to work around animals, including reptiles, mammals, birds, and insects. Instructors must have a good knowledge of first aid techniques; the ability to lead activities, including tours, arts & crafts, sports and games; and the ability to deal effectively with campers and resolve problems. Instructors are required to learn and sing camp songs. Must be team-oriented and possess excellent oral communication and customer service skills. Bilingual is a plus.

Must be available for orientation on Saturday, June 7th, for a week of training from June 9th – June 13th, and for the entire duration of summer camp from June 16th - August 8th.

Physical Requirements: Strength to perform average lifting of less than 5 pounds and occasionally over 15 pounds; body agility and equilibrium for activities including touring and games; back and leg coordination for activities involving stooping, kneeling, and crouching. ZooCamp requires daily walks (a minimum of 30-45 minutes) through the Zoo and may walk 2 or more miles per day.
