The Rock Island County Forest Preserve District has an immediate opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced individual who will be responsible for directly overseeing and managing the conservation and education activities of Niabi Zoo in the position of Curator of Conservation & Education. The Curator of Conservation & Education will be responsible for promoting Niabi Zoo and its mission to the community; developing and overseeing the implementation of the Zoo’s educational messaging; developing and administering the Zoo staff’s ongoing training and professional education program; managing and enhancing the Zoo’s role in conservation on a local and global scale; managing the Zoo’s volunteer and docent program; ensuring a safe and enjoyable visitor experience; building and maintaining working relationships with AZA-accredited institutions and programs; participating in public relations programs; and aiding in the continuation Niabi Zoo’s pursuit of excellence. The position is under the general supervision of the Assistant Zoo Director and Zoo Director. This position is management/supervisory and is, therefore, an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires time worked in excess of forty hours per week.

The position requires knowledge of the current best practices regarding the care of animals in modern zoo facilities; minimum three (3) years of experience involving the education and training of guests, staff, and volunteers in a zoological institution, aquarium, museum, or related facility; graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in the biological sciences, education, or related fields; or any equivalent combination of experience or training which provides knowledge, ability, and skills to successfully at times work independently or within a team to complete Niabi Zoo’s goals and objectives; the ability to communicate orally and in writing; to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the public. Applicants must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and nights as needed.

The Rock Island County Forest Preserve District has excellent benefits, which include health, vision, and dental insurance, retirement, paid holidays, paid personal days, vacation, and sick time.  Salary ranges from $30,000 to $40,000 based on qualifications and experience. 

Niabi Zoo is a 50-acre zoo located in Coal Valley, IL. With an annual attendance of over 250,000, Niabi Zoo is one of the largest attractions in the area and the 3rd largest zoo in the state of Illinois. Niabi Zoo maintains an animal collection of approximately 330 individuals comprised of over 140 different species. Niabi Zoo is a dynamic and growing facility with a strong future.
