Position: Marine Mammal Department Intern

Reports to: Senior Mammalogist/ Curator of Marine mammals

Job Summary: This position is designed to introduce basic animal care, training and husbandry skills for those with interest in pursuing a future career in marine mammal training or zoo keeping utilizing operant conditioning. The candidate is responsible for assisting in the daily care and maintenance of sea lions, seals, and sea otters and their environments.

Internship Dates: Summer Beginning of May until Beginning of September . (non-paid)

Flexibility with start and end dates on an individual basis/possibility of extension

Job Requirements:

• Must be able to understand, communicate, and follow written and oral instruction

• Must be agile with a good sense of balance in order to maneuver around the exhibits and lift 75 pounds

• Must be physically able to perform laborious tasks in extreme weather conditions

• Must be able to work weekends and holidays and some evenings if necessary

• Must be able to adapt to an ever changing work environment

• Must have completed at least 2 years of college or be a recent college graduate in the field of science, psychology or other related animal field within the last 2 years

• Must be able to exercise care and judgment when working with animals and in exhibits

• Public speaking skills are required utilizing a microphone

Job Description:

• Performs daily animal diet preparations, routine cleaning of animal exhibits, kitchen and freezer areas, and administer daily enrichment

• Responsible for learning basic operant conditioning techniques with the possibility of application

• Responsible for progressing through a 3 step training program. Progress will be done at the intern’s initiative through hands on learning, observation, completion of multiple worksheets, quizzes, and exams dependent on levels.

• Complete all reading assignments and undertake specific intern projects

• Assist with pool cleans and maintenance as well as weekly water quality testing

• Assist in unloading periodic deliveries of frozen food and maintaining freezer to USDA standards

• Assist in training and husbandry sessions with marine mammals when directed

• Accurately maintains all written computer records and daily observations of animals

• Performs other duties relating to the Aquarium’s goals and mission statement as required
