The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the leadership role of SciQuarium Curator. The GSC is North Carolina’s only dually AZA and AAM accredited institution. The Center’s 20-acre AZA accredited Animal Discovery Zoological Park is complimented by a 68,000 square-foot AAM accredited science museum. The all-new 23,000 square-foot Carolina SciQuarium, a hybrid museum-aquarium complex, opened June 29, 2013 to record crowds. Designed by GSC employees and Cambridge Seven/MMPA, the SciQuarium combines unique, water-dependent species and exhibits with “SciPods” of interactive learning. SciQuarium exhibits include: fishing cat, Asian small-clawed otter, African penguin, Amazon River, large stingray touch tank, a 100,000 gallon shark/reef tank and three “SciPods” themed on species adaptations, water quality, husbandry and aquatic veterinary care. The SciQuarium Curator is responsible for LSS and water quality at all exhibits but primarily focuses on the care and management of all fish species. The position requires specific expertise related to the management of the Shark Reef exhibit which contains three species of sharks, large southern stingrays, a spotted eagle ray and over 400 fish. The curator position will also immediately lead the design and development of two new projects: SciPod 3 (5-8 new systems) and SciPlay Bay, a phase-II “kid-aquarium,” focused on inspiring careers in marine biology.
Curator-SciQuarium is a hands-on curatorial position. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to: comprehensive understanding and operation of all exhibits and corresponding LSS, management of all aquatic species through acquisition, quarantine and daily husbandry, SCUBA certification, dive program leadership, implementation of AZA standards, precise record-keeping, staff scheduling, enrichment, coordination of aquatic veterinary services, lead conservation and research initiatives, exhibit development/modifications, professional development for staff, liaison with the center’s AS degree program in Zoo and Aquarium Science, departmental budget management, vigilance over all animal-based safety and security and leadership in animal department educational programming and docent training. Core leadership attributes must include: team player, strong communication skills, work cooperatively with all departments, promote animal department visitor interaction, visionary, dependable, consistent, leads by example, comprehensive understanding of AZA standards, and involvement in AZA programs.
Salary is commensurate with experience, starting range $35,000 to $42,500. The GSC maintains a profit-sharing ethic and provides employee raises and/or bonuses per operational surpluses. A BS degree and three years of curatorial or senior aquarist leadership experience at an AZA institution is strongly preferred. Position includes an excellent benefit plan valued in excess of $10,000 paid by employer. A NC driver’s license will be required within 3 months of starting date.
