National Aquarium is seeking an Aquarist to participate in the development and care of a new permanent gallery “Atlantic Seashores”, featuring 2 large touch exhibits, and exhibiting a variety of local teleost, elasmobranchs, and invertebrates including jellies. This Aquarist will also be part of the team responsible for the daily care of the Changing Exhibits gallery “Jellies Invasion” and respective support areas, and will participate in the transition to and care of future Changing Exhibits. Duties will include, but are not limited to cleaning tanks and back-up areas, managing water quality, maintaining LSS, conducting operant conditioning with elasmobranchs, culturing a variety of jelly species and live foods, and interacting with guests, volunteers, and educators. This Aquarist must be able think and work proactively, problem solve, and handle emergency situations. Requirements of this job include a Bachelors degree in Biology or related field, or equivalent experience. Applicants should have previous aquarist experience working in a public aquarium or zoological setting, possess detailed knowledge of a variety of Atlantic fishes, invertebrates, and algae, be knowledgeable about water chemistry and closed-system filtration, have strong interpersonal skills, intermediate computer skills, excellent observational and problem-solving skills, and be able to work well individually as well as within a team. Applicants with prior experience keeping and culturing jellies and/or utilizing operant conditioning, particularly with elasmobranchs, are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be able to obtain a MD driver’s license, climb ladders, and lift 50 lbs. Open water SCUBA certification is preferred. Must work holidays, weekends, and evening hours as needed.
