Since Brookfield Zoo opened its doors to the public in 1934, the Chicago Zoological Society has had a legacy of educating the public about animal care and conservation of the natural world. The Society inspires and engages children, students, teachers, and others among the general public to make a positive impact on the natural world around them. The coordination of photography services and photographically documenting images for a wide variety of needs throughout the institution, including but not limited to donor visits, animal care, and events contributes to build awareness about CZS leadership in animal care, education, research and conservation.

As a Photographer/Photography Coordinator, you will coordinate the scheduling and fulfillment of photography requests, and takes photographs as part of the Society’s photography program. Drawing upon your prior experience, you will maintain the Society’s digital image collection including the filing, retrieval and processing of requests for use of existing image as well as select and provide imagery that supports the Society’s brand to fulfill photography requests. You will actively participate in donor and VIP cultivation during special tours and fundraising events by art directing and photographing while engaging guests in conversation; and, work with staff on the fulfillment of these photo opportunities to maximize cultivation potential. Through the use of photography you will assist to document zoo animals, people, activities, and events for Society staff including, but not limited to, animal programs, public relations, communications, veterinary programs, special events, presentations, and interpretation. You will work closely with Marketing to shoot social media assignments; some assignments may shoot with electronic communication devises for immediate upload to social media sites. You will also maintain equipment so that it remains in good working condition.

This position requires a savvy professional photographer who works closely with Development/fundraising staff with respect to visits to the zoo from important donors, potential donors, and other high-ranking VIPs and officials. This is a full-time position, which may occasionally include weekend, holiday, and evening work. Incumbent may assist and inform the public as needed.

The requirements for the position include:

Bachelor’s degree in Photography, related field, or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required.

Minimum three years photography experience required.

Minimum one year comparable experience photographing and interacting with high-level VIPs and officials.

Ability to assess situations involving photography assignments and discern appropriate opportunities to interact with and engage VIPs and when to defer to other staff to do so.

Strong organizational and time management skills required

Must possess an even temperament, be self-motivated, flexible, confident, punctual, reliable, and enjoy working in a dynamic team environment.

Must be diplomatic and tactful; able to deal with all levels of staff, guests, trustees, visiting dignitaries, and donors. Articulate, well-spoken individual, capable of effectively representing the organization professionally to various multicultural audiences, both within and outside the organization.

Must be highly skilled in digital imaging and must produce professional-level, quality photography.

Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop or comparable photo editing software required.

Valid driver’s license required. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents.

The desirable/preferred qualifications for the position include:

Working knowledge of Macintosh computers.

Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint preferred.

Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
