Salary: $35,285/yr.

Examination is announced to establish an employment list to fill one vacancy in the Zoo department and future vacancies as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications for Admission to Examination:

High School diploma or GED, with vocational/technical training, or college coursework in veterinary sciences; Bachelor’s degree in Zoology or related field is preferred; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in animal health care or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and Veterinary Technician’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.

Kind of Work

Health Curator will work with the staff veterinarian in maintaining the health care of the animal collection. The health curator is responsible for the husbandry and care of the hospitalized and quarantined animals and the few exhibits surrounding the hospital; maintain the cleanliness of the hospital and quarantine building; keep hospital stocked of medical supplies and drugs; schedule collection of laboratory samples and run any in house tests; assist veterinarian in diagnostic testing and surgical procedures; enter all medical records into MedARKS and/or ZIMS computer programs. Curator will supervise the keepers in proper nutrition and enrichment for the collection; and work with keepers in operant conditioning for medical procedures. As a member of senior staff, curator will meet twice monthly with health care committee, serve as a first responder, assist with public relations, and assist with interview process of zookeepers.

Kind of Examination

This examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, a performance test or any combination thereof deemed necessary to adequately screen and rank applicants. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, place, and date of assembled testing, if used. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their previous training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment.
