This full-time position is responsible for the care and well-being of African ungulates, primates and other small mammals. Duties include, but are not limited to, daily care and feeding of assigned animals in collection, maintenance of animal exhibits and night-houses, behavioral observations, record keeping, animal enrichment, operant training, assisting veterinary staff and public presentations. Reading, studying, and learning about the species under the care of this position is required to increase knowledge about the species as well as to increase the value of the educational programs. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for the educational programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
General husbandry and care of assigned animals.
Close observation of animal behaviors with a particular focus on eating, walking, and defecating to monitor health of animals.
Shift animals according to area’s safety protocol.
Advanced animal catching, restraint and handling techniques.
Maintain detailed daily records on assigned animals.
Inspect, clean, and maintain both exhibit and off-exhibit areas.
Propose and perform species-specific enrichment.
Knowledge of husbandry requirements, and the prevention of zoonotic diseases.
Knowledge of basic nutrition requirements for assigned area(s).
Knowledge of operant training.
Interact with guests during both formal and informal discussions.
Report animal illness, maintenance, safety, horticulture, or other needs to appropriate staff.
Assist in animal procedures including translocations, immobilizations, crating, and veterinary procedures.
Respond to and assist management in guiding the resolution of emergency situations within the zoo.
Knowledge of zoo’s layout and animal collection to respond quickly during animal emergencies.
Knowledge of safety protocols, safety concerns, and reporting protocols.
Observe safety policies and procedures in regards to the use of zoo’s equipment, materials, chemicals, and vehicles.
Other duties as assigned.
Work is performed under the direction of the Park Supervisor. Additional guidance is received through established policies and procedures, plus verbal and written communications.

Minimum 18 years old.
Must be able to work as part of a team.
Must be self-motivated and goal-oriented.
Must possess basic canoeing skills and ability to swim.
Must be able to use a bicycle or tricycle.
Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills are essential.
Must have the ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. A college degree in a biological science is preferred. Experience in a zoological environment is desirable.
Ability to respond to common inquiries, requests or complaints from guests and/or staff in a kind and courteous manner.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals.
Must be able to communicate with guests and staff clearly and effectively.
Must be able to prepare clear and concise reports.
Multi-lingual is a plus.
Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Needs to be able to think logically and solve problems with little or no guidance.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Florida State Driver License.
A negative TB test.
Recent tetanus shot.
Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR card within the first year of hire if not already certified.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 pounds, stand for long periods of time and drive Zoo bicycles. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach or feel and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to sit, walk distances, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.

A large percentage of duties are performed outdoors in various weather conditions, ranging from rain, wind, cool to cold weather, and extreme heat and humidity. It is possible the employee will be exposed to dust and harsh chemicals that if not handled properly may present a health hazard. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
