The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and The Fund for Animals (FFA) are seeking a Ranch Hand II in the equine department for its Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch.   

Black Beauty Ranch is a world-renowned animal sanctuary located in east Texas.  Its over 1,300 acres are home to more than 1,000 domestic and exotic animals, many of whom have been rescued from near-death situations such as slaughterhouses, biomedical research laboratories, and trophy hunting ranches.  Bison and cattle, horses and burros, antelope and apes, camels and llamas all have permanent, safe homes at the ranch, which was founded in 1979 by Cleveland Amory, author and animal advocate.  

Commitment to the goals and programs of the HSUS & FFA along with the highest quality animal care skills required.  Must have the ability to follow directions and record observations; communicate with other staff members and supervisors; identify changes in animal behavior or medical status.  Minimum 3 years’ experience working with equine and high school diploma required.  Experience working with large equine herds and wild mustangs a plus.  Bachelor’s degree in biology, ranch management, animal science, or similar field preferred but may be substituted with an additional 3 years equine experience.  

This position involves substantial animal husbandry responsibilities, limited basic medical work, and some administrative duties (record keeping).  Day-to-day responsibilities include feeding, cleaning stalls and pastures, monitoring behavior, enclosure maintenance and enrichment activities.  Ranch Hands also work with and mentor interns.  Proof of negative TB test is required. Tetanus and Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are recommended.  

Desired candidates are mature individuals with the ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful situations, a demanding work load and long hours, and work independently or as a team. Must be able to move/lift 50 to 75 pounds; to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and to work with a variety of equine breeds and temperaments.  Applicants should possess a strong personal work ethic and a high level of integrity.
