The Phoenix Zoo is seeking a Lead Animal Diet Technician to assist the Manager of Nutrition Services in the Commissary. This position will include operation management, inventory, quality and food cost controls, and training and mentoring of staff. The Lead Animal Technician is heavily involved with the monitoring and reporting aspects of the Commissary operations, including maintaining diet worksheets and SOP’s, preparing feed and forage for outside analysis and interpreting the analysis reports, communicating diet and feed changes to animal husbandry staff, completing data entry, and acquiring a variety of feeds and supplies while ensuring efficient and economical purchasing practices. This position is responsible for assuring compliance with USDA, AZA and OSHA standards, will assist with staff scheduling as assigned, and represent Nutrition Services during meetings, tours and program activities.

Minimum requirements for this position include a High School Diploma with a preference for a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Biology, Nutrition, or related field. A desirable candidate will have at least 2 years relevant experience in zoo animal diet preparation, food service or equivalent, good oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal skills, strong leadership qualities and efficient math skills. This job requires an ability to work with live insects, rodents, and other food animals and you must be comfortable humanely euthanizing animals per USDA and AZA standards. All Phoenix Zoo employees are required to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen, this position will also require an annual TB test, possession of a valid driver’s license, and ability to work a flexible schedule.
