Senior Marine Mammal Trainer

The Texas State Aquarium is actively recruiting a Senior Trainer of Marine Mammals to join the Aquarium’s Marine Mammal department. The Texas State Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to inspire appreciation and wise stewardship of the Gulf of Mexico.

Essential Functions

The Senior Marine Mammal Trainer will participate in the training, husbandry, and maintenance of the Aquarium’s Atlantic bottlenose dolphin population. Duties include exhibit care and maintenance, assisting veterinary staff with medical procedures, and animal record keeping. The Senior Marine Mammal Trainer will deliver both on- and off-site presentations.


The successful candidate must be motivated, a self-starter, and enthusiastic; demonstrate excellent communication skills and team-building abilities. The successful candidate must have advanced knowledge of cetacean husbandry/training and must be able to lift 50 pounds. A Senior Marine Mammal Trainer is regularly exposed to outside conditions in coastal Texas, and must successfully pass an initial and annual swim evaluation. A valid Texas Drivers License must be obtained within three months of employment.


A Bachelor’s degree in psychology, biology, zoology, or a related degree is preferred. A minimum of five years experience in cetacean husbandry/training at an AZA and/or Alliance accredited aquarium or zoo is required. Open water SCUBA certification is required.
