Herpetology Internship

The Greensboro Science Center's internship program is designed to give selected college and graduate students the opportunity to utilize their academic knowledge in a professional work setting. Participants will find that their internship experience will help them develop leadership skills, determine future goals, and network with professionals. Interns may receive course credit for their internship by completing all school and program requirements. All internships are unpaid.

The Greensboro Science Center is looking for qualified interns for a fall herpetology internship. Interns will assist keeper staff in all aspects of daily animal husbandry and care. Interns should expect to learn AZA skills to prepare them for a full time career in this highly competitive field. The selected intern will work with a number of reptiles and amphibians, so applicants should be comfortable around snakes. Responsibilities will include daily observations, cleaning of exhibit and holding spaces, daily diet preparation, implementing enrichment, preventive health care, and assisting with husbandry training. Interns will be expected to work with native venomous species. Interns typically work a 40 hour, 5 day schedule. However, school year internships can be scheduled around class schedules. Herpetology interns should have at least 3 full days available during the week OR afternoons 5 days/week. The selected applicant will be expected to start in late September and continue through late December.

Interested candidates must be able to lift 50 lbs and be able to perform physical work outside in varied weather conditions. Interns must have proof of a current TB test. Applicant should have college level schooling in the biological sciences, AND 6 months of related animal care experience. Preference will be given to senior level or recent college graduates pursuing zookeeping as a career.
