Junior Zookeeper Program Intern

The goal of the Red River Zoo's education internship program is to provide a pre-professional work environment that gives you opportunities to further develop your skills through hands-on experience interpreting a wide variety of animal and nature based education programs. The following position is available to current college students enrolled in the education or biological science field.

Position: Junior Zookeeper Program Intern

Interns will assist the Junior Zookeeper Coordinator in the preparation and presentation of the Junior Zookeeper Program. The Junior Zookeeper Program allows children aged 11 to 17 a wonderful opportunity to learn about a variety of animals at the Zoo, and to share their knowledge with the public. Some of the things a Junior Zookeeper will do include Responsibility for the Zoo's Domestic Contact Area, Show & Tails, Docenting and Edu-Carts, Zoo Garden and Face Painting. The Junior Zookeeper program has proven to be a great way for kids to learn responsibility, build leadership and time management skills, gain self confidence, and get some quality time with animals. You will also be trained on how to handle a variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and birds in a presentation setting and may be called upon to help with the education animal husbandry.

Positions available: 1-2 depending on individual’s availability

Hours: Days and times will vary based on your schedule. At least 20 hours per week.


Duties include the following but are not limited to:

• Work with the Junior Zookeeper Coordinator to prepare and present Junior Zookeeper program

• Develop new curriculum for current programs or future programs

• Lead animal presentations

• Learn general animal husbandry of the education animals

• Learn how to handle education animals

• Assist with special events and off-site programs when available

General Requirements

• Be passionate and curious about the natural world

• Be outgoing with good communication and organizational skills

• Enjoy working with a variety of age groups and a variety of animals

• Comfortable speaking in front of an audience

• Complete and send in a volunteer application

Additional Requirements

• Have completed at least 1 year of college at an accredited institution

• Have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher

• Learn how to care for the education animal collection

• Send in a completed internship application form, a cover letter and resume
