The Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls, South Dakota is seeking a Staff Veterinarian. This position will maintain and promote the health care program for the zoo’s animal collection through the use of current preventative medicine, diagnostics and treatment practices; develop programs to limit zoonotic disease transmission and transmission of disease between animals; and serve as a resource for all zoo staff on issues related to animal health and nutrition.
The Staff Veterinarian will report to the Director of Animal Programs and will be responsible for the leadership and management of the Veterinary Services Department, currently comprised of consulting and relief veterinarians, a veterinary technician, interns, and students. In addition, the Staff Veterinarian will work closely with the Animal Care Department comprised of thirteen Zookeepers and two Area Supervisors.
The right candidate will be an energetic and experienced professional who has knowledge, skills, and experience with clinical zoological medicine including preventative medicine, nutrition, emergency medicine, diagnostics, and treatment. Clinical experience should include hematology/cytology, anesthesia, radiology, sonography, pathology, internal medicine, and surgery.
The Great Plains Zoo is a dynamic and fast-paced institution with a zoological collection of over 1000 specimens representing over 150 species including mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and insects. Additionally, the zoo also serves as a regional rehabilitation facility for raptors and native wildlife.
The 45-acre Great Plains Zoo is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a growing community with a MSA of 223,000, and recently recognized by Forbes magazine as the best small metro area in the nation for business and careers. The Zoo has an annual attendance of over 249,000 and growing. The Zoo has recently completed a Master Plan, upgraded many exhibits and facilities, recently opened a new Snow Monkey exhibit, and will soon finish construction for a new Zoo entrance, gift shop, and education center.
