Salary: $3,331 per month, subject to pay adjustments

Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: independently caring daily for mammals, birds, reptiles/amphibians, fishes and invertebrates; cleaning animal cages and enclosures including scrubbing, disinfecting, sweeping, hosing, and removing manure and refuse; preparing and measuring food; distributing and placing food in assigned animal enclosures; observing animal exhibits closely and immediately reporting any unusual behavior, symptoms of illness or injury, or unusual condition in the enclosures; assisting in disease control, treatment, and care of sick and injured animals, and in the care and rearing of orphaned animals; participating in public education and animal enrichment programs; maintaining animal exhibits, enclosures, and facilities; following and enforcing safety regulations; assisting in the recapture of escaped animals and other emergencies involving animals; assisting in the renovation/restoration of animal exhibits; maintaining plantings within and adjacent to enclosures; providing information to zoo visitors; preparing daily reports and assisting in maintaining health and inventory records of animals; and assisting in the control and eradication of pest and rodents.

There is one vacancy with the Department of Enterprise Services, Honolulu Zoo. Position will require shiftwork and to work any day of the week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays with varying days off. You must be able to lift and carry animal feed weighing approximately 50 pounds. Position also involves working under unpleasant conditions including, but not limited to: dust, water, hot and humid, smelly and full sun. This list may be used to fill future vacancies in this department.



Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care of ZOO animals.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of methods of caring, feeding, and watering a wide variety of ZOO animals; behavior traits of a wide variety of animals (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects) and the ability to follow oral and written instructions; keep records; apply safety precautions involved in the exhibition of zoo animals; enforce zoo regulations and detect unusual behavior or condition of animals.


Valid Hawaii driver's license (Type 3) prior to appointment.
